Faculty

Lee Buderus, MS, LMT
Lee earned his Bachelors Degree from Southern Illinois University and his Master's Degree in biology from Sam Houston State University in Texas. Lee went on to teach anatomy and physiology in a college setting in Texas for close to 10 years, and also taught anatomy and physiology at a massage school in Texas. After moving to Florida, Lee graduated from the Humanities Center School of Massage in 2004 and began building a private practice in Tampa. Lee joined Cortiva Institute - Florida massage school (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) faculty in June 2005, and he serves as the Head of the Science Department.

Terri Carvey, MS, LMT
Terri hails from Michigan where she received her Bachelors Degree from Alma College in 1985 and her Masters of Science from Michigan State University in 1987, in Exercise Physiology. From 1987 to 1990, Terri served as Supervisor of the MSU Sports School. She subsequently moved to Florida and graduated from The Humanities Center School of Massage in 1991. She currently has a private practice in Tampa, specializing in sports massage and rehabilitative techniques. She has received numerous postgraduate trainings in Neuromuscular Therapies , Myofascial Release , various rehabilitation techniques, Sports Massage and Visceral Manipulation .

Terri is the lead instructor in the therapeutic modalities. In addition, she offers Sports Massage Certification seminars with Kirsten Snellenburg, DPT. Terri has been an instructor at Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) since 1994.

Robert Chambers, LMT
Rob graduated from the Humanities Center School of Massage in 2001. He has built his private practice in a clinical setting at Baylife Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation , and he is also currently enjoying his massage career at the Chiropractic and Applied Kinesiology Clinic in St. Petersburg. He specializes in acute and chronic complex conditions, and he blends myofascial and neuromuscular techniques. The students love his gentle, but knowledgeable demeanor in the classroom. Rob joined the Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) faculty in January 2006. Rob teaches Foundational Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, and Student Clinic.

Lynn Ellen Gaffin, BA, LMT
Lynn Ellen graduated from the Cortiva Institute - Humanities Center School of Massage in 2006. She is the instructor for all levels of Business and Professional Ethics & Communication courses. Lynn Ellen is also an online instructor for Cortiva working with Cortiva students from all over the country. She has three years of secondary education experience in a public school setting, graduate level education coursework and certification in Maryland, combined with 22 years experience in Information Technology, software development, training, career model development, and management. Lynn Ellen practices massage at her clinic, The Art of Touch , in Largo, FL.

Jan Lundberg, DC
Dr. Lundberg is a chiropractic physician who joined the faculty at Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) in 2006. She teaches in the Science Department. Originally from Boston, Jan's undergraduate education included studies at Quinnipiac College in physical therapy and UMass Boston in pre-med basic sciences. She is a 1988 graduate of Western States Chiropractic College in Portland OR. Jan's special areas of interest and post graduate study include Dance Medicine (addressing the special needs of dancers the treatment of dancers and performing artists), kinesio-taping , hippotherapy (the utilization of horses in a therapeutic setting), botanical medicine, yoga, and Pilates .

Paul Merada, AA, LMT
Paul Merada has been practicing massage at the Vinoy Resort and Spa for the last ten years. He is a 1998 graduate of the Humanities Center School of Massage School. Paul acted as Spa Supervisor at the Vinoy Resort and Spa until 2008 when he decided to pursue his love for massage therapy full-time. Paul continues his massage practice at the Vinoy, and he is excited to share his expertise in Spa Therapies and customer service to the students at Cortiva Institute. Paul has been married to his wife, Judy for 18 years and has lived his whole life in St. Petersburg. Paul holds an A.A. degree from St. Petersburg College .

Thuy Nguyen, BS, LMT
Thuy graduated from the Humanities Center School of Massage in 2002. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from USF , and she is currently doing graduate level coursework studying Education with a concentration in Biology. Thuy has worked in a variety of settings performing massage therapy including a chiropractic clinic, a salon and spa, and a privately owned gym. Thuy joined has been a faculty member of Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) since September of 2006. She teaches foundational massage and a variety of therapeutic applications of massage. During her free time, Thuy enjoys playing tennis, a good game of billiards or darts, and all things related to music. If you have a corny joke, she is always looking to add to her stand-up routine.

Anne Salisbury, LMT
Anne graduated from the Humanities Center School of Massage in 2000. Anne continued her postgraduate education by earning certification in Sports Massage and Pre-and Post-natal Massage. She has a successful private practice in St. Petersburg, specializing in advanced therapeutic techniques, corporate chair massage and pre- and post-natal massage. Since January 2005, Anne has been assisting Terri Carvey and Kirstin Snellenburg with their Sports Massage Seminars. Anne re-joined the Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) in January 2006 to teach Foundational Massage, Neuromuscular Massage , Myofascial Release , and our Special Populations Massage class.

Jennifer Wakeman, LMT
Jennifer graduated from the Humanities Center School of Massage in 2002. She is currently pursuing her degree in medical science to fulfill her dream of becoming an Osteopathic physician. She has enhanced her massage education with certifications in Structural Integrative techniques for the pelvic/torso region, cervical region, cranium and TMJ. Jennifer has worked in a variety of clinical based settings including Family & Sports Chiropractic and Pain Management. She specializes in acute and chronic injuries/conditions. She joined Cortiva Institute - Florida (formerly Humanities Center School of Massage) in October 2006 as a massage instructor. Jennifer dreams of being able to impart her knowledge of integrated therapy and medicine abroad through full-time missions after her children are grown.

Marc Westergard, DOM, LMT
Marc is our Director of Education and a 1991 graduate of the Humanities Center School of Massage. Marc has 16 years of combined experience treating a wide range of soft tissue injuries with massage, oriental bodywork and Ancient Chinese Medicine . In the mid 90's, Marc was a massage instructor at the Humanities Center School of Massage teaching hands-on classes in relaxation massage and therapeutic modalities. He is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine, and his clinic, Rising Phoenix , is located in Largo, FL. Marc has a family practice and he specializes in the treatment of children and pregnant moms using acupuncture, custom Chinese Medical herb formulas, acupressure , and oriental bodywork.

Bettye Jo Wray-Fears, MA, LMT
Bettye Jo has been practicing and instructing Eastern Bodywork and massage therapy as a licensed massage therapist for over 20 years. Bettye Jo has had a teaching affiliation with the school for over 15 years. She is currently a foundational massage instructor at Cortiva Institute and she instructs in the Student Clinic as well. Bettye Jo initially earned her Shiatsu certification in Germany in 1986 and then graduated with a diploma in massage therapy in 1988 from the Humanities Center School of Massage School of Massage. She is certified as an international shiatsu instructor with the Gemeinschaft fur Shiatsu im Deutschland. Bettye Jo also holds a M.A. degree in Mental Health Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. She is the director of the Shiatsu Massage Institute, a continuing education organization that specializes in eastern bodywork, and she also co-authored a book published in Germany called Spiel-Raume: Die Funf Elemente im Leben fur Kindern, (Room to Play, The Five Elements in the Lives of Children). Bettye Jo has a private practice in Tampa specializing in integrative massage therapy, mind-body centered psychotherapy, child development, play therapy, individual, child, parent, couples, and family counseling.
