Thai Yoga Bodywork

June 27 - 28, 2009 / 9:00am - 6:00pm / 16 hours / NCBTMB Approved / $320
Thai yoga bodywork is a fusion of traditional Thai massage principles
and yoga. It is a gentle form of bodywork that creates a lengthening and
broadening experience on a fully dressed client on a mat on the floor.
It combines stretches and yogic postures with compressions and release
work on every major muscle group using an ingenious system of movements
that allows the therapist to manipulate the client with minimal effort
by using weight and leverage. At the end of a treatment, both the client
and the therapist will feel relaxed and energized. Learn a complete, full-body
Thai yoga bodywork routine using the tools of the body: feet, hands, forearms
and knees. In addition to traditional Thai techniques, you will learn
how to use other tools and props for leverage that will give you a fresh
perspective on body mechanics.
Instructor: Jonathan Vogel, LMP -
Jonathan
has been teaching bodywork for over 20 years. Twelve years as a professional
dancer career provided Jonathan with a unique perspective on body mechanics
and movement. More than two decades of teaching for the Brian Utting School
of Massage have seasoned this instructor of kinesiology, anatomy and Thai
massage. A BS in Zoology and Chemistry gave Jonathan a wide base of knowledge
that helps to make his classroom interactive and playful. Jonathan finds
use in all tools of massage, choosing most often a combination of body
leverage and his feet or knees as well as hands to apply pressure in bodywork
sessions. He loves the combination of heated stone, deep work and the
use of bars in the ceiling to hang from (i.e., Ashiatsu style) as well
as a bodywork style known as Breema, which combines breathing with presence
and ease.

PNF is easy-to-learn and allows you to quickly relieve pain and range
of motion issues presented by so many of your clients. In this engaging
and dynamic 12 hour course, you will become proficient with 15 PNF stretches
in both the upper and lower body. You will also learn the basic muscle
physiology that clearly explains how PNF works so well. See how you can
facilitate a direct communication between the brain and the muscle being
treated. When the brain is involved with the stretch, a more rapid release
of pain is possible. This hands-on class is approximately 80% table time,
which prepares you to confidently use your PNF skills immediately with
your clients.
Instructor: Shuna Morelli, MS, LMP - Shuna
has been using PNF to successfully treat people with
soft tissue injuries for over 11 years. She has been a PNF and kinesiology

August 8 - 9, 2009 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 14 hours / NCBTMB Approved /
$320 before 7/18/09; $350 thereafter
This class will continue to explore the concepts developed by Elizabeth Dicke in the 1930s.
We will focus on orthopedic application of the techniques learned in Bindegwebsmassage I
as well as joint application and supplemental strokes to support the foundational
techniques already learned in Bindegwebsmassage I.
Bindegewebsmassage is perhaps best described as a type of "reflexive" bodywork that
can allow a massage therapist to effect change in viscera and connective tissue. This
technique is one of the most prescribed therapies in Germany and is used in many hospitals
and clinics as part of standard rehabilitation protocols. Sessions generally take about 30
minutes and can be done with your client in a massage chair or on the massage table.
You will revisit the A & P of the nervous system, as it applies to Bindegewebsmassage,
and the protocols for addressing a wide array of pathologies. This technique is non-invasive
and easy to use by the therapist. It requires only a light pressure and easily adopted body mechanics.
Prerequisite: Bindegwebsmassage I (Connective
Tissue Massage).
Instructor: Dale Perry LMT -
Dale Perry has taught massage for the past 14 years including Swedish,
Bindegwebsmassage, medical, lymphatic, sports, and myofascial release and

Many massage practitioners who are comfortable massaging adults would
also like to attain that same level of comfort with children. This class
enables them to do just that: by making massage fun and relaxing for children,
they learn early that the massage therapist is their friend! In this pediatric
massage class, we discuss the growth and development of children, how
childhood events such as birth and injuries can affect the child's body,
and how these events can initiate musculoskeletal pain and restriction
later in life. Students then learn how to engage and hold children's interest
during massage sessions, how to perform a basic pediatric massage routine
and finally, how to tailor it to individual children. Pediatric Massage
Therapy by Marybetts Sinclair is the required text for this class, and
students will use it during class and later as a resource for massaging
children who are stressed, injured, have aches and pains, or have disabilities.
Students need to bring one or more children (ages 3-14) to class on both
Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 2-4pm, however, they do not have to
be the same children both afternoons. Sunday morning (10:30am-1pm) we
open the class to children from the community, especially children with
disabilities, and their parents. Please note: This is NOT an infant massage
class and does not equip students to practice infant massage. Please note:
Pediatric Massage Therapy by Marybetts Sinclair is a required text for
this class and must be purchased in advance. It is available for purchase
at Waking Life Massage & Supply in Seattle, WA. You can reach them at
(206) 729-2024.
Required Materials: Pediatric Massage Therapy

Instructor: Marybetts Sinclair, LMT -
Marybetts has been practicing massage in Corvallis, Oregon, since 1975. She has
practiced massage in many different environments, including health spa,
private counseling office, children's summer camp, home office, and chiropractic
clinic. It was not until she had been practicing massage for at least
a decade that she began to understand how many of her clients had musculoskeletal
issues that had begun in childhood, and therefore, how valuable pediatric
massage could be. She has taught massage at community colleges, hospitals,
and a wide variety of community organizations. She has also been fortunate
to teach pediatric massage at many special programs for children with
disabilities, including programs at local schools and therapy centers,
institutes for neurodevelopmental therapy, and at special clinics in both
Mexico and Ecuador. She is the author of Massage for Healthier Children,
Pediatric Massage Therapy, and Modern Hydrotherapy for the Massage Therapist.
Marybetts is especially interested in adding simple, effective, non-toxic
natural remedies to everyone's life as they care for their family, friends,

on 9/13/09!
This intensive course combines the art and science of touch to create
safe, effective massage sessions for clients with cancer, in cancer treatment
and with cancer histories. In a lively, supportive learning environment,
we carefully debunk the long-held contraindication to massage and discuss
current research findings about the benefits of touch for people with
cancer. Participants learn essential cancer intake questions, proper follow-up
on the client's answers, and proven strategies for involving a client's
physician when necessary. We describe concrete massage adjustments for
surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, bone metastasis and vital organ involvement.
A balanced approach to learning blends lecture, spirited discussion, and
hands-on work with volunteer clients with cancer. Music, art and literature
by people who have had cancer help expand our understanding of the journey.
Massage therapists from varied backgrounds and massage settings leave
with tools that continue to support them in their work: sample client
intake forms, physician information and permission materials, and summaries
of massage research. IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT FREE MASSAGE CLINIC FOR PEOPLE

Professional Ethics for Bodyworkers
Register Now
September 26, 2009 / 9:00am - 4:00pm / 6 hours / $140
This class fulfills Standard V of NCBTMB's Standards of Practice requirement.
In the rapidly expanding field of massage therapy, concerns regarding
ethical behavior and practice are also on the rise. Given the intimate
setting of bodywork, it is crucial to establish a safe environment and
a clear understanding between client and therapist as to what is expected.
Therapists must also be able to effectively communicate within the parameters
of each individual's unique personality, including their own. The intent
of this workshop is to define the broads cope of ethics, empower each
therapist with their own personal Code of Ethics, and explore possible
ethical situations which will challenge participants to make good decisions
as to how they respond.
